Have you reached your goals? Why not?

by Charlie on November 1, 2010

It’s November already; 2010 is nearly over. Are you going to be able to wear that t-shirt? I’m sure you all started the year with goals and targets for 2010. You certainly should have done so. Have you achieved them?

For many the answer will be ‘no’. Now what does that mean? First there is no need to over-react. If you have set the bar high, then falling short does not indicate terrible failure but some self assessment is a good thing.

  • Were your targets realistic?
  • Has your activity been consistent enough?
  • Have you applied course corrections?
  • Is more personal development needed?
  • Are you really duplicating the system you are using?

How big should your goals be? Pie in the sky dreams with no pragmatic plan to achieve them just lead to frustration when you don’t reach them. But network marketing is all about dreaming. My advice is that you should definitely have some really big and exciting dreams up on your vision board (you have one of course?). But then the strategy for getting there should be broken down into realistic steps – both monthly and annually.

One of the essential keys to success is to apply the principle of the Slight Edge – the progressive realisation of a worthy ideal. ‘Progressive’ is the magic ingredient. Your actions must be performed on a daily basis. Bursts of activity, catching up on the weekend or when you have a couple of days off is not the way to build momentum.

Have you ever tried to push start a car with a flat battery? You apply steady pressure and it takes a little while before the car starts rolling fast enough the jump the engine into life. Ease back on that pressure and the car never gets going fast enough.

Now course correction is one to think about. I’m not talking about flitting like a butterfly. You must adopt lead generation strategies and work them diligently. But you know how the Apollo moon rocket was off course more than 90% of the time. The engineers were constantly adjusting the flight. It’s the same for us. You must fine tune unless you are successfully bringing in a constant flow of leads, regularly converting to new business partners. If 3 or 4 months go by and you have been truly consistent in your activity, then be prepared to examine how you are working if you are not getting the results you want.

Regular personal development work is essential. Stable growth in your business comes from development in your downline. Building leaders is essential. But if you are not becoming a better leader and inspiring your team to grow, you will be constantly baby minding a group of under achievers. Aim to spend at least an hour a day studying books or audios. Work with a mastermind group as well if you can.

You must have a duplicateable system in place to build your business. But even if you have this, it is very easy to drift and to begin to introduce your own modifications. I have seen this with people using the very successful system I have in place. I have been guilty myself. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – at least till you reach the top.

So be prepared to take stock of your progress. Work with your mentor and take his or her advice. But above all don’t get into a knee jerk reaction. In his book ‘The Multi-Level Money Machine’, Randy Gage states that it can take 2 to 4 years to establish a good income. It might take longer and you might be pushing the car for a fair bit of that time.

So what else would you add to this list? Leave a comment and let me know what you think.

Hi Charlie,

the end of the year becames a period of self-assessment, nearly inevitably. If a year lasted 18 months, peopple would do it every 18 months instead of 12 months. Human nature ?

I like the approach of dreaming big and aiming high – and of applying the Slight Edge principles. Daily consistent action towards our goals, that is highly important.

The analogy with the Apollo rocket is also awesome; more than 90 % off course and it reaches its final destination with the precision of a Swiss clockwork.

Thanks for sharing your thoughtful insights.

Take care

Hello Charlie,

First of all I would like to congratulate you for a very inspiring, thought-provoking blog. I didn’t realize until I read your post that the year is almost over and yes it’s time to once again evaluate our own performance for the past months. I like the part when you mentioned about setting realistic goals which will enable us to plan our day to day activities to reach it. Knowing how to adapt to changes is another important thing to think of because change indeed happens everyday and in order to cope with it, we need to learn to go with the flow which can actually help us in our development.

Best,

Ana

thank you Ana

yes I believe that coupling big goals with a pragmatic plan works well.

We definitely have to be able to adapt to changes or we will be stuck in a rut that is not giving us what we want.

Hi Charlie,
I agree, it’s a really thought provoking, sit up at your desk kind of blog. Too often we can continue doing something which just isn’t getting the results we desire and deserve. It often takes the help of another mind, ie. a mentor to point it out to us.
Yes, unless we constantly plan, do, review and adjust we’ll only be one small step ahead this time next year. I will be giant steps ahead with new paths opening up all around me.
Thanks for the constant support with your insightful blogs.
Roisin.

Hi Charlie,

Wow, thanks for the reminder… the year has flown by!

While I can’t say that I’ve reached 100% of my goals, I can say that I’ve gotten a lot farther in most areas than I would have dreamed at the start of the year.

What a great topic and well thought out post. Thank you!

Where has the time gone?

Great insights Charlie – goals are there as a target you set yourself, an end destination. And, as a sailing ship captain would do, you need to accept that there are external influences that can cause you to alter direction – but, like the captain, you also need to be checking your course from time to time.

Those external factors are not necessarily your mistakes & you should not harbour any negativity on them, simply see them as minor hiccups that you can steer around.

However, like the captain, without an end destination to map a course to, you will also be sailing around in circles if you cannot determine your end point. Only when you know what your end point (goal) is, can you chart your course of action.

Then, like the captain, you actually need to cast off from the dockside!

Stay inspired!

I agree Michael that we need to accept what happens without any negativity. If we allow that then we get on a downward spiral. It’s just the way things are.

As the late Jim Rohn used to say about any adversity “Well isn’t that interesting”.

Sorry Charlie, I have to disagree with you, but only a bit.

What is a goal???

Is you goal a source from you ego?

- If so, you have to been able to stay in that “ego” mode, to reach you goal.

- If you those to change to the spirit mode, you are out off control!

- What happen when you are out off control?

- The devine take over, IF you let it.

Hi Soren

some disagreement is stimulating as it leads to dialogue. I’m not sure what you are saying disagrees with my article.

If we are living in the ‘now’ then we should not be living from ego and it is true that goals that are based in ego will either fail or not bring true satisfaction.

If we live in the moment then we are naturally in tune with our higher self and things will flow naturally.

good to hear from you & let’s chat sometime

Hm – good post, a complex topic – goals for sure are a good way to reduce procrastination if someone is prone to it – if procrastination is not a topic I am mor einclined to be with Soren – work to the best of your abilities and “let go” life has a way of taking care of itself and provding themost surprising results. To much happens all the time which is entirely outside of our control and yet may be good.

hi Frieke

do you feel that goals are only useful if we are prone to procrastination? I do not believe goals in themselves will cure procrastination.

Surely without goals we can’t programme our subconscious mind as to the direction we are going.

I agree that we do have to let go in the sense of not being attached to results. We do the work and then allow results to come as they will.

Certainly lots to think about on the subject
