Goal Setting – should you aim for the stars?

by Charlie on July 26, 2010

Setting your goals too high can be a recipe for frustration and disappointment. But hey, what about all those dream boards filled with pictures of beautiful mansions and exotic holidays?

We often tell newbies in network marketing to set big goals. You know the stuff about it being impossible to ask for too much. I’ve done it. I still do. That’s the big dreams and that’s fine. But how you get there is by working day to day on the small stuff.

So you want to earn 10K a month or even just 5K. But have you ever seen that kind of money? Do you know what it feels like? If you or your new team members are like most people, that’s like funny money – to begin with. It is possible to go from zero to big bucks in just a few months. It does happen. But for most of us, this is not how it is, despite all the hype you hear. You got into network marketing to reach that goal but you are setting yourself up for failure if you keep telling yourself it is definitely going to happen super fast. I know, I’ve been there and I’ve seen it happen to a lot of guys.

Disappointment, frustration, a nose dive and then people quit. Maybe they go hunting the next opportunity. Another good person lost down the rat hole of broken dreams.

So how do you avoid that but still keep aiming high? Have the dream board in place. I look to my left from my computer and there it is and I have some outrageous pictures on it, because I know those things will be mine. But then put that aside and sit down with your new distributor (or yourself) and look honestly at what you have earned till now. How much extra cash each month would make a big difference?

Remember Jim Rohn’s stories about ‘The Magic of Part Time’. I reckon an extra thousand a month, part time, to start off, would make a lot of difference to most folk. If you want more, that’s OK too. But be realistic and set out your plan of action accordingly.

The next step is to build a self-talk (auto suggestion) that backs this up. But sometimes the missing ingredient here is how we feel. Plans and strategies are great. But they can cause you to get too bound up in the ‘how’. Here’s a tip. You have a figure in mind:

  • Close your eyes; relax; imagine you have it. Now what is the feeling that comes up?
  • Relief, joy, sense of security?
  • Whatever it is will be yours so own it.
  • Then as soon as you wake each day, spend at least 20 minutes reliving the feeling.
  • As you dive into the feeling, let that take you back to your goal.
  • When you achieve the goal, then move to a higher one.

This will open you to the abundance of the universe, free of your notions of how to achieve it. Then you will be much more receptive to new people or ideas that come along. And you must do it before getting into the day.

If you try it, let me know how it works for you. I would love to hear what happens. But remember to give it time.

Hey Charlie, this is a great post.

I think there are two big problems expecting stuff too much too soon (basically what you said) and expecting anything without putting forth effort.

I would like to state, that most big named network marketers had to work at it and figure it out to the tune of 10's of thousands in debt and 3 years hard work before they had their huge success. So it definitely takes time and effort to make it in this business.

Thanks for the great post!

Great to meet you Michael. You make a good point when you say how much many top network marketers have invested. It does nobody any good to pretend otherwise.

thank you

Hi Charlie,

great post. I would say, the goal can't be too big ;-) The time frame can be too tight. And that leads to unnecessary frustration and disappointment – and home-made pressure.

Thanks for sharing.

Cheers

Oliver

Hi Oliver

thanks for that, Yes, the time frame causes the problem for most people. There are enough challenges without home made pressure.

I think we should all have high goals but with distinct steps on how to get there.

There is a danger of setting goals too low. For example if I am achieving my goals but not really getting anywhere I may be setting my expectations too low.

I could set a goal to make $100 per month and easily achieve it, or I could set a goal of $10,000 and only achieve $4,000.

Hi Peter
yes I agree. It is important to have big goals but I believe the steps should be realistic. Mind you what is realistic is different for everyone. Intermediate steps should still stretch us of course.

Appreciate the feedback, thanks

Hey Charlie,

Nice job on goal setting. Having goals is one of things successful people do, no matter what.
I revisit mine quite often…What a great reminder this post was.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for this post…

I remind myself every now and then that focusing on getting those big external results won't fulfill us. They might be fulfilling temporarily, but not fulfilling in the long run.

That's not to say forget about them, but they are manifested from first being fulfilled on the inside.

Take care,
Wayne

Hi Wayne
I like that, being fulfilled on the inside. We do need to be fulfilled and successful within for the external things to manifest. In themselves they do not bring happiness.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for sharing your input concerning goals. Goal setting is one of the very fundamental actions for obtaining success in whatever we desire in life. It all starts with our dreams and then become our goals; however, there is one very critical step prior to setting that goal.

It is our reasons for obtaining those goals. If our motivation (reasons) are not strong enough for accomplishing the goal, the odds are pretty great that we won’t have the determination to keep the course.

Great article and thanks for being a part of this great industry.

Make it a great day!

great to meet you Lloyd

You are so right when you refer to the motivation we need. Nothing works without that.
