MLM Secret – improve presentation skills, pt 1

by Charlie on July 10, 2010

I went to a workshop with Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter a couple of days ago. Chatting with him afterwards, he said “I don’t really believe in the Law of Attraction that much.” Well that floored me when you think how much we all talk about attracting the right people, positive attitudes etc. but he went on to say that although all the positive self talk and dreams are important, we must develop skills to turn all the positive affirmations into success.

I think too many people who have watched the film ‘The Secret’ come away with the idea that all you need to do is to have big dreams, vision boards overflowing with pictures, loads of positive mental attitude and success is yours. Not so easy.

Like Big Al said, if you are negative you will surely push people away. But if you are positive and you are talking to a lot of people, yet still not building a big business, something is missing. Big Al told us his story. During his first two years in network marketing he worked really hard, talked to loads of people, attended lots of meetings – and – sponsored nobody. His sponsor kept telling him to work on his attitude, his goals, his dreams but still success eluded him. He was highly motivated and he had goals. Then he went to a workshop and someone told him the secret.

It’s all about how you talk to people; communication; skills. Have you been taught some of those sleazy sales type techniques? “When would suit you best to meet, Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon?” “Well what didn’t you understand about the presentation/compensation plan etc?” When you talk like that, people put up their defences and back off. If you are a red personality and you want to blast everyone in sight and just collect the few left standing, well that’s fine. But what works for most of us?

Just remember that not everyone is a prospect for your business. Most folk are quite happy where they are (even though they complain about things). Why bother with pitching at someone who is not interested? So your first job is to find out what they really feel about their present situation.

Try asking “What do you like about working here/your present computer repair business/etc?” Just that simple and then they will usually tell you what they really feel. If everything is just fine, then move on to the next volunteer. If not then read my next post to find out some of the magic words that will cut through the barriers that people put up.

Your success rate will improve dramatically when you learn how to talk to prospects.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for sharing an important message.

The law of attraction is about thinking, feeling and acting in accordance with your vision. It's like the “universe being your waiter” analogy. Sure you can ask and receive but you still have to pay the bill at the end of the meal. The bill consists of continual mental and physical effort to attract and receive whatever you are focused on.

Hi Charlie,

Spot on, the law of attraction is about having a solution to other peoples problems in some part. Some will want you solution other won't no matter how much they complain. We can just ram our solution down everyone we meet. Great post and thanks for sharing.

Hi Charlie,
this is a great article. Yes, some people seem to forget that the law of attraction is very well, but there's work involved and a plan. We don't need to know exactly what we're going to do and how – but in order for me to travel from my location to Berlin for example, I need either enter my car, a train or a plane. The desire and the imagination alone won't do the work for me, that means transfer my body wonderfully to another location. For the rest, I agree with Sören !
Take care
Oliver

The Law of Attraction is just one piece of the puzzle.

I could have all of the business skills I need but if I am a toad who is going to be attracted to me to do business :)

But I agree overall with Big Al, you gotta have the skills.

I love the word picture Oliver – kind of hard to get to Berlin just imagining it – thanks for that.
