You need skills; you need to learn how to close prospects and sign them up; you just have to talk to as many people as possible and find ways to keep increasing your list. Has that really worked for you? How about looking at what Napoleon Hill said in “Think and Grow Rich”. After all this is a book that I am sure most of you, as professional Network Marketers, have heard of or read. It is a classic manual of personal and business growth. So what tips does he give to grow your home business? Although MLM as we know it did not exist at the time he wrote the book, his principles still apply to us today.
In chapter 12, “The Subconscious Mind” he lists his seven Positive Emotions:
- Desire
- Faith
- Love
- Sex
- Enthusiasm
- Romance
- Hope
If you have the hard nosed approach of the heavy hitter to growing your home business, then read no further because these tips are not for you. Emotions have a place in business? If Napoleon Hill was talking about them back in 1937, way before such things began to be explored in the late 20th century, then maybe we should look seriously at what he said.
You need goals and targets; team training and a marketing system. But if you have the wrong mind set, you will shoot yourself in the foot. You might get people on board but they won’t last. What Hill was talking about was attracting the right people to you and inspiring them so that they develop a driving ambition that fires them from within. We respond to positive feelings. Power can grow from the barrel of a gun and for a while men can be ruled by fear as dictatorships around the world have demonstrated – but they crumble. Love and faith will inspire men and women to feats of heroism. You only have to look at the examples of people such as Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Mother Theresa.
Old style business building methods in MLM encouraged you to hit on everyone within sight after having burnt out your warm list of family, friends and everyone else you had ever met! Often this came from greed and fear. Who likes being approached in this way? Would you respect someone who pushed their business opportunity at you like this?
This industry is all about relationships. It is a mentoring and coaching business, not a sales business. It is about volunteers choosing to join you and then deciding to build their team with your support. There is no place for the boss mentality. Ground yourself in those seven positive emotions and I would add another – Prosperity. The late, great Jim Rohn made a fantastic audio CD called ‘Building your Network Marketing Business’. I highly recommend you have it in your library and listen to it often. As well as being full of wisdom, it is delivered in his incomparable amusing style. He talks in there of how he used to tip like a rich man in a restaurant – long before he was wealthy – because he knew he would be wealthy.
Live from a mindset of prosperity and you will attract to you the best people. Live without an agenda. Stop thinking of signing people up. Rather think what you can do for them. You will be amazed how it changes your business.
